Discussion:
Display adapter resources conflict with ACPI BIOS
(too old to reply)

I have a new Dell Dimension 8300 PC that uses the new,
Pentium 4 Intel 875P chipset and an nVidia GeForce FX
5200 AGP graphics card. I just installed Windows 98SE on
it because I have hardware and software that is
incompatible with Windows XP. Each time the computer
boots I receive the following error message:

"Your display adapter conflicts with another device in
your computer. To correct the problem, click OK to view
the Properties for this device."

Device Manager then reports the following for "Device
status":

"This device cannot find any Input/Output Range (I/O)
resources to use (Code 12)."

The Resources tab shows several memory range conflicts
with "System board extension for ACPI BIOS". I unchecked
the "Use automatic settings" box and tried to manually
configure the resources for the display adapter and the
ACPI BIOS but the system reports "This resource setting
cannot be modified".

As a result, my graphics card doesn't work properly and
is stuck in standard VGA mode with 16 colors.

Is there any way that I can configure my system to
eliminate the resource conflicts and use my graphics card
normally?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

A bit of clarification is needed. Did you install 98SE to create a dual
boot systems (XP & 98SE) or did you replace XP with 98SE?

BTW - XP has a compatibility feature that allows you to run programs in
Windows 98 (even Windows 95) mode.

I replaced Windows XP with 98SE. After I get 98SE
working, I'll re-install XP to create a dual-boot
system. So far, I only have 98SE installed.

I have quite a few older programs that my kids enjoyed
playing under Windows 98. They will not even install
under XP. I also have two steering wheels and a joystick
that won't work under XP. For this reason, I'm trying to
create a dual-boot system. I successfully did this on my
old computer (Intel 440BX chipset) but my new Dell
Dimension 8300 uses the Intel 875P chipset and Dell never
worried about how to support Windows 98SE with this
system. I've talked to their tech support twice and am
getting the message that their system is incompatible
with Win 98.

I appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.
